YAFIN – Young Aboriginal Families in the North

Aboriginal Woman
PROGRAM BROCHURE

What We Offer

YAFIN is a culturally responsive, trauma-informed support service for young first-time parents of Aboriginal children. The program provides specialised early intervention support from pregnancy through to a child’s second birthday, with the aim of reducing the number of Aboriginal children entering out-of-home care, supporting children to remain safely in the care of their family wherever possible. YAFIN is committed to promoting the safety, wellbeing, and empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families during this important stage of life.

Using a trauma-sensitive and strengths-based approach, YAFIN supports families through assertive outreach and family-led decision-making. The service works alongside families to build on their existing strengths, enhance safety within the home, and reduce risk. Through a flexible outreach model, YAFIN provides one-on-one support, group-based therapeutic activities, and peer support in environments where families feel safe and comfortable. The program also assists parents in navigating health and community services during pregnancy and after the birth of their child, while empowering parents, extended family, and kin to support infants to thrive throughout their first 1,000 days of life - from pre-birth to two years of age.
